On Friday 11th November pupils and staff from Van Zant group were invited to run a stall at Hyde Town Hall. The items for sale included lots of handmade poppies from felt and leaves. We also had some wreaths made from plastic as well as decorated picture frames and we managed to raise £25.

At 11.00am we joined members of the public for the 2 minute silence. It was a poignant moment and very powerful as the clock chimed.

In the reception area of Hyde Town Hall is a beautiful poppy display from pupils of Thomas Ashton School.

In October 2015 Mr McBurnie Mrs Mac, Tyler Campbell and Shania Keegan embarked on a trip to Belgium to visit the battlefields. This was a huge success and was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Both Shania and Tyler then teamed up with two pupils from Hyde Community College who they met whilst on the Belgium trip and hosted a Remembrance Day event at Hyde Town Hall courtesy of Councillor Fitzpatrick. They were able to sell handmade poppies which pupils back at school had made and raised an incredible £48 for the British Legion.

It has been a real privilege helping to host this year’s scarecrow competition. We were delighted that Rachel Summerscales from ‘Operation Farm’ allowed us to display the scarecrows from the four special schools:

Hawthorns, who had a large, scary crow; Oakdale, who had a very cute cat; Samuel Laycock, whose ‘Dracula’ was a big hit with a lot of selfies being taken!; and Thomas Ashton, who had an ‘Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Art’. They were all displayed in the orchard at Hyde Park on Sunday 18th October.

On Thursday 10th September we had a cake sale in aid of Reubens Retreat as this would have been Reuben's 5th birthday.
We would like to thank all our pupils and parents who made a purchase and also we would like to thank Hyde Community College for their kindness and generosity in allowing us to sell our homemade cakes at their school.
With the proceeds of the cake sale (£62.83) we have bought a bin and a duvet from their gift list for the retreat in Glossop.
